A verb is a word that denotes being, having, or doing something. Verbs are classified in four different ways.
- Main Verb and Auxiliary Verb
- Transitive and Intransitive
- Finite and Nonfinite
- State and Event

Main Verb and Auxiliary Verb
Principal Verb or Main Verb
Verbs that are used independently without the help of other verbs are called main verbs or principal verbs.

Examples:
- John is a teacher.
- I have an umbrella.
- Peter does his work perfectly.
In the above sentences, ‘is, have, does’ are used without any help from other verbs. So these verbs are Principal Verbs or Main Verbs.
Auxiliary Verb or Helping Verb
An auxiliary verb is one that helps a Principal verb to form a tense or mood or voice. Hence it is also called a Helping verb.
Examples:
- Alisha is writing a letter.
- I have come to school.
- John does not go to school.
- Mia will sing a song.
In the above sentences, is, have, does, and will each of the verbs are Helping verbs of main verbs write, come, go and sing.

- He is studying for his exam.
- They are playing soccer in the park.
- We are watching a movie tonight.
- The cat is sleeping on the couch.
- You are reading a book right now.
- My parents will come to visit us next month.
- The company shall invest in new technologies to stay competitive.
- My friends are coming over for dinner.
- They may need more time to finish the project.
- He may have lost his pen.
- The flowers are blooming in the garden.
- The teacher is grading the tests.
- I am not feeling well today.
- The sky is turning dark.
- The software could be updated to fix the bugs.
- You can use my laptop if yours is not working.
- They have been studying for hours.
- He has not been feeling well lately.
- We have decided to go on vacation this summer.
- They must attend the meeting at 2 pm.
- We must obey the laws.
